The African Union, through the Inter-African Phytosanitary Council (AU-IAPSC), is organizing an event dedicated to the coordinated management of Banana Bunchy Top disease, which affects banana production in several African countries such as Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. The event involves collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), with the aim of strengthening food security and supporting the local economy through improved phytosanitary management.

Zambia hosted one of the most prestigious entomological events in Africa and worldwide, marking 45 years of existence. Acknowledging the role of insects in agriculture and trade, the Inter-African Phytosanitary Council of the African Union (AU-IAPSC) partnered with the African Association of Insect Scientists and various international organizations, including CABI, IITA, FAO, CIMMYT, ICIPE, GIZ, CORAF, and others, to celebrate insects and honor the scientific legacy of Professor Thomas Risley Odhiambo, a pioneer of reconciling with nature in the service of peace, food security, and sustainable development.

<p>The African Union Inter-African Phytosanitary Council (AU-IAPSC) is organizing a consultative meeting with its strategic partners and stakeholders to strengthen its Strategic Plan 2025–2029.</p>

<p>AU-IAPSC is developing a Phytosanitary Strategy for Africa (PHSA) to combat plant pests, aggravated by climate change, which threaten biodiversity and the agricultural economy (40% of GDP, a large share of exports and employment).</p>

For the first time in the history of the African Union, the Secretary of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), Mr. Osama El-Lissy, physically attended the preparatory meeting of the 17th session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (Pre-CPM-17) in Douala, Cameroon. This meeting, organized by the African Union Inter-African Phytosanitary Council (AU-IAPSC), brought together IPPC Contracting Parties, Africa’s Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and other stakeholders. The event was highlighted by the official launch of the Africa Phytosanitary Programme (APP), a global phytosanitary initiative valued at USD 37.8 million, aimed at the effective management of plant pests and diseases and the socio-economic development of the continent.
